Hints

Here is a brief guideline for stone bundle choosing.

  • Do you own a sharpening stone collection compatible with Hapstone? Choose Basic Bundle.
  • You have EDC / Hunting / Tactical / Traditional Japanese knives made of powder steel (ZDP-189, ZDP-247, S30V, S35VN, S90V, S110V, 154CM, D2, YXR7, Cowry, S290, S390, K294, K390, M390, Elmax) or traditional hard steels (154CPM, ATS-34, 440C, AUS-8, AUS-10, A2, BG-42)? Choose Silicon Carbide Bundle.
  • You have Kitchen / EDC knives made of soft carbon or stainless steel (1095, 1080, 1070, 1050, 420, 440A, 440B, 3Cr13, 8Cr13MoV, 8Cr14MoV, 9Cr14MoV, AUS-4, AUS-6)? Choose Aluminum Oxide Bundle or Boride Bundle.
  • Diamonds have substantial advantages to traditional abrasives: they are universal, can be used dry, and have a long life. Unfortunately, there are disadvantages too: microchipping and deep scratching (especially on powder steels), weaker feedback. It's recommended to flatten and lap diamonds, so we don't recommend diamond bundle to inexperienced users. If you consider it a good compromise, choose Diamond Bundle.

How to use bundled stones

Basic

Basic stones are made of silicon carbide. Water is required to use. Immerse all stones in water for 10 minutes before use and keep them wet during the work. Do not keep the stones in water for a long time.

Silicon Carbide

Bundled stones are made of silicon carbide. Water is required to use. Immerse all stones in water for 10 minutes before use and keep them wet during the work. Do not keep the stones in water for a long time.

Stone set is optimized for sharpening knives made of hard steels. You can use 120 and 240 grit stones on soft steel knives. Using 600, 1000 and 2500 grit stones with steels with hardness less than 58 hRC is not recommended.

Aluminum Oxide and Boride

Bundled stones are made of aluminum oxide. Water is required to use. Immerse all stones in water for 10 minutes before use and keep them wet during the work. Do not keep the stones in water for a long time.

Stone set is optimized for sharpening knives made of soft steels. Using the stones with steels with hardness more than 59 hRC is not recommended.

Diamond

Bundled diamonds are dual-sided, one side is coarser than others. Three stones have a total of six grits. It is a little bit tricky to identify grits. You can find identification marks on the side face. The mark is grit specified in FEPA-F scale with arrow symbol facing to the corresponding surface. A finer side is always copper colored.

All diamonds are bonded, not coated. It means you can clean, refresh, flatten and lap your diamonds like any other synthetic stone.

It's recommended to use water as a lubricant to prevent stone loading.
