Decent system if you are just a hobbyist. After sharpening 3 knives I have noticed quite a few things I didn’t think of before making my purchase. First thing is the stone holder/guide rod…. It holds 6” stones which is nice but since the guide rod is so short you aren’t able to use the entire stone while keeping your angle consistent. Once you get a little more than halfway down the guide rod the stone holder shifts vertically the further down you go in turn changing your angle by as much as .8 degrees which doesn’t seem like a lot but it’s very frustrating and noticeable. Secondly is how steep the stone holder is and ends up sliding down the blade when you are trying to adjust the angle after switching stones which makes it that much harder to keep your angle consistent as you move through each stone. Lastly when I assembled the sharpener I noticed the right side of the rotating clamp holder was lower than the left so every time I flipped my blade over either my tip or my heel was lifted higher than the opposite side. That took about 10min to adjust and tighten the screws separately while keeping everything level. Other than those 3 things it’s actually pretty cool. Love the size of it and how a beginner sharpener can get pretty good results with minimal practice. I hope to upgrade the clamps soon but the stock clamps work pretty well. Love how they are angled so you can flip them around depending on how large of a knife u are sharpening. I also found two longer screws that fit the clamp so that I could fit thicker blades since the original screws wouldn’t reach the nut to tighten on my thicker knives. For $200 bucks it’s a good deal for sure but I wish I would have known what I now know and I would have saved up more $ and got either the Hapstone R2 Standard or saved even more $ and went with the Kabritva Luch

My first uprgrade after being an Edge Pro user for 13 years. Just amazing build quality, heavy, zero wobble. Amazing stuff and I have no clue how they do it for this price. It is compact, clamps work really well and it is just a joy to use. Two minor things: there is just some slight and varying resistance in how the stone holder moves in and out. Gives you a little less feedback on what the stone is doing on the steel. Probably just a matter of break-in. As with all clamp systems: to really inspect your work, you need to remove the blade a quick feel and then continue with touch ups is not easily doable. But overall I am more than happy with the RS !

Coming from a KME which I’ve used for 6-7 years. While it has served me well over the years and has accounted for many successful sharpening sessions I felt it was time to explore other opportunities. Have used the new Hapstone RS twice now. While coming from the KME it felt a little awkward at first I quickly settled in and began getting excellent results with it and the three stone Venev set. Very happy so far!

A giant step up from my apex edge-pro because it holds the blade securely. My edge-pro stones fit correctly. Some care is necessary to center the blade in the clamps if there is no flat area for the clamp to rest on. Otherwise, solid and very easy to use.

Having had the Hapstone R2 for a couple years, I was looking for something a bit more portable. This RS system fits the bill. PROS: 1. very sturdily built. 2. quality throughout. 3. the clamps are quite good at holding a variety of knife shapes and sizes. (so far, I've done from 2" blades to 10" blades with no real problems.) 4. the magnet holding the ball end of the slide is quite strong. You would have to try hard to knock it off in use. CONS: 1. the base, although stable, could be a bit thicker/heavier. 2. the clamps are just a bit short so the knife handle usually won't pass by when flipping sides. just means you can only rotate one direction. This isn't a reason to not buy it, but it would be nice to not have the issue. The problem with the short clamps could be eliminated by making the guide rods longer and longer clamps so the knife would clear when rotating. However, that would diminish the advantage of the smaller size. Maybe Hapstone could find a solution to this in the next generation of this model without compromising size. Overall, bottom line is that for $200 it's a fabulous sharpening system.

Enjoyed using sharpener. Works well. Really like the rotation of 180 degrees to sharpen other side. Great price point. Have not used 300/600 diamond stones yet. I'm sure they are going to be fine. Thanks for a great product.

Upgraded from a WS-PA to this thing and the difference is night and day. Never going back and I don’t see the need to ever upgrade either, considering the variety of stones it can take. My only complaint, is that some knives that can’t clear the base when switching sides. Reversing the base plate fixes this issues, and I find that it’s still sturdy enough.

The RS is a very well designed knife sharpener despite its compact size. The clamps are some of the best clamps I have used. I was skeptical about the magnetic attachment for the guide rod, but it holds very securely. The angle adjustment is easy with the macro and micro adjustment collars. The stone holder works very well and allows multiple size stone to be used. The only change I would make is the addition of a stop collar. I purchased one when I bought the RS and it works much better. I would highly recommend this sharpener for someone who is just starting out and also for people with guided system experience.

Superb sharpener Very compact system. An ideal size for a sharpener. The magnetic ball mechanism for the sharpening rod is excellent. The fine adjustment knob is also excellent for dialing in the angle between plates/strops to make sure it's consistent. The ease and speed which you can flip the knife over to the other side is excellent. The little platform to zero the angle finder is helpful. The base could be larger. Still solid for it's compact size. Minimum angle is constrained by the height of the blade being sharpened. On very small knives I could only get 16 degrees. Normal folder size down to 12 degrees. Medium fixed blade side down to 9 degrees. The "rod in a tube" sharpening arm can only accommodate 1 stopper. Overall this is an excellent sharpening system and great value.

This sharpening system was exactly what I was looking for. It is an accurate system to sharpen knives from the kitchen to pocket knives. I was impressed with the build quality and ease of setup. I can use stones from all my other guided systems including KME, DMT, and Edge Pro. Unfortunately Sharpmaker rods are a bit too long for the holder. All in all I am very happy with the RS and recommend it if you're on the fence about buying one.
