Metallic Binders

M2-01 - Copper-tin alloy matrix.

MS-1 - Copper-tin alloy matrix reinforced with silicon carbide (metal matrix composite).

MB-1 - Copper-tin alloy reinforced with boron carbide (metal matrix composite).

MS-1A - Aluminum-copper alloy matrix reinforced with silicon carbide (not confirmed).

Resin Binders

B1-10 - Boron-modified phenolic resin (BPF) composite, made of powdered bakelite, copper additive

B2-01 - Boron-modified phenolic resin (BPF) composite, made of liquid bakelite, iron additive (softer than В1-10)

В2-01М - Boron-modified phenolic resin (BPF) composite, made of liquid bakelite, copper additive (softer than В2-01)

OSB (OCB) – A proprietary phenolic resin composite. (OSB and OCB refer to the same binder; the difference arises from a transliteration quirk of the Cyrillic “ОСБ,” which can be rendered as either “OSB” or “OCB” in Latin script.)

What is the legacy binder and how does it differ from the Dragon/Phoenix binder. I am finding that the Centaur matrix is slicker and not as abrasive as the dragon type matrix type in the small Cerberus I ordered to test. Is any other stones available in this matrix? Does it matter in the Legacy binder?

A - The Legacy binder is used in the lower grit stones.

Initially (a few years back) the same "legacy" binder was used in all the Venev stones, including the finer grits, but it was found that it caused scratches and abrasion to a coarser level than the grit of the stones itself. Venev decided to develop a "OCB" new generation binder for the finer grit stones (400 and up) with no abrasive particles in the composition. This makes the finer grit Venev stones far better finishing stones.

I was the understanding by what I've read here that the New OBB binder is yellow. However the two stones I just purchased both have yellow binder on the F400 side and Red on the F800 side. Confused!

I've asked Konstantin (the owner of Gritomatic) to get in touch with you here with more information for you. He's more of an expert on the composition and different generations of the Venev stones.

Another thing that is a bit confusing, is the site states that the new OCB binder is in the finer grits and is a yellow color. We all see that most of the fines stones are in yellow and red binder. Yes? My 400-800 is yellow= 400F, red=800F

I'm beginning to think Konstantin for what ever reason no longer cares about the business or his customers. Hope I'm wrong. KnifeMaker

Not at all, he cares about it a lot. He's just very busy moving Gritomatic to a new warehouse.
