Tam O'Shanter is a rare sharpening stone used for super finish sharpening knives on KME or Hapstone knife sharpeners. Tam O'Shanter stones are mounted on high-quality aluminum blanks.
Tam O'Shanter Whetstone was mined in Dalmore region, Scotland, in the United Kingdom. The estimated grit for the stone is 8000-12000 JIS.
Tam O'Shanter stones can be of the following types:
Tam O'Shanter is recommended to use as finish or micro-bevelling with hard steels sensitive to micro-chipping.
Tam O'Shanter is preliminarily lapped and does not require lapping after purchase. Tam O'Shanter stones should be used with water as a lubricant. Tam O'Shanter stones may have slight natural imperfections. Tam O'Shanter stones always have a color pattern; this is not a defect.
Advantages of aluminum blanks
- If you accidentally drop the stone, it's less likely you break it;
- Much longer life span for the stone after multiple flattening and lapping;
- Easy identification due to laser engraving;
- Reliable clamping for stones of imperfect shape.
Stones mounted on aluminum blanks are thicker than stock KME stones. We recommend using the thickness compensator if you use stones of different thickness.
