Jasper sharpening stones are used for finish sharpening and honing knives on Hapstone and Edge Pro sharpeners. Jasper is a naturally abrasive material of high density. Jasper stones are mounted on high quality aluminum blanks.
Jasper is mined in the Ural mountains in Russia. Jasper is a dense, opaque variery of cryptocrystalline chalcedony, contains significant proportion of Fe-oxides and hydroxides. Jasper does not consist of individual abrasive grains of the same size. A Jasper microquartz structure consists of a fused crystal grains of different sizes.
Jasper stones should be used with one of these lubricants:
Jasper stones do not have any minor defects.
Jasper stone does not require any preparations. It is naturally lapped to ultra-fine grit. This is a big advantage because the difficulty of lapping Jasper is very high.
Grit terminology is not applicable to natural sharpening stones, including Jasper. The behavior of a natural stone depends on its density and how good it was lapped. However, experts estimate Jasper as 8000 - 10000 JIS.
