I can't get a good clamp on the stones due to the anlgled groove in the holder, the work sharp stones are a flat and squared edge, also are there any accessories I can add to my holder to get a better grip on it?

I suggest using this stone holder, it's more versatile

These work with the Work Sharp Professional precision adjust, not with the regular Work Sharp precision adjust.

For the regular precision adjust, get the Leading Edges stone holders for the Work Sharp precision adjust.

What would be some good choices to pair with this as an upgrade to what Work Sharp includes out of the box?

It's hard to give proper guidance without a lot more information but it depends on the type of steel, desired edge performance, edge polish desired etc. Depending on the steel type, you might not actually want to use ceramic aluminum oxide based stones at all.

For any steel type, I would recommend going to something like a Venev diamond resin based F800 and F1200 (Fepa-F grit rating) stones. If, for some reason, you want to mirror polish your edge after this then use a diamond pasted on a strop.

If you're only ever sharpening legacy type steels (not modern super steels) then you can stick to ceramic based aluminum oxide stones.

This is a similar model to the Work Sharp Precision Adjust Knife Sharpener and is sold on Amazon.

Gritomatic does not sell those, so I can't say for sure. The internal dimensions of the Hapstone universal stone holder is 6mm.

Compatible with the R2 guide system.

Yes, this is actually the same holder as the one used in the Hapstone R2. It will hold non-backed stones just fine, as long as you adjust the clamp position accordingly to allow the spring to hold your stones.
