Zirconia Ceramic Stones are used for sharpening knives on Hapstone or Edge Pro knife sharpeners. Stones are mounted on high-quality aluminum blanks. Zirconia stones are made of Alumina-Zirconia ceramic with an extremely high hardness rating (over 9 Mohs) and estimated grit approximately 5000 JIS.
Alumina-Zirconia Ceramic scarcely wears over time. The material is used for manufacturing ceramic ball-bearings, dental crowns, and lapping plates for computer chips.
Zirconia Ceramic is preliminarily lapped and does not require lapping after purchase. Zirconia Ceramic stones should be used with oil as a lubricant (oleic acid, WD-40, refined olive oil).
Alumina-Zirconia has the density 4.00-4.05, compared to the standard Alumina density 3.70-3.75. The increased density gives the ability to make extra lapping if necessary.
