Jasper sharpening stones are used for finish sharpening and honing knives on Hapstone and KME knife sharpeners. Jasper is a naturally abrasive material of high density.
Jasper is mined in the Ural mountains in Russia. Jasper is a dense, opaque variery of cryptocrystalline chalcedony, contains significant proportion of Fe-oxides and hydroxides. Jasper does not consist of individual abrasive grains of the same size. A Jasper microquartz structure consists of a fused crystal grains of different sizes.
Jasper stones should be used with one of these lubricants:
Only one side of the stone is lapped. Opposide side is marked by slate pencil - don't use it.
Jasper stones do not have any minor defects.
Jasper stone does not require any preparations. It is naturally lapped to ultra-fine grit. This is a big advantage because the difficulty of lapping Jasper is very high.
Grit terminology is not applicable to natural sharpening stones, including Jasper. The behavior of a natural stone depends on its density and how good it was lapped. However, experts estimate Jasper as 8000 - 10000 JIS.
