Here is a brief guideline for stone bundle choosing.

  • You already own a sharpening stone collection compatible with Hapstone? Choose Basic Bundle.
  • You have EDC / Hunting / Tactical / Traditional Japanese knives made of powder steel (ZDP-189, ZDP-247, S30V, S35VN, S90V, S110V, 154CM, D2, YXR7, Cowry, S290, S390, K294, K390, M390, Elmax) or traditional hard steels (154CPM, ATS-34, 440C, AUS-8, AUS-10, A2, BG-42)? Choose Silicon Carbide Bundle.
  • You have Kitchen / EDC knives made of soft carbon or stainless steel (1095, 1080, 1070, 1050, 420, 440A, 440B, 3Cr13, 8Cr13MoV, 8Cr14MoV, 9Cr14MoV, AUS-4, AUS-6)? Choose Aluminum Oxide Bundle.
  • Diamonds have strong advantages to traditional abrasives: they are universal, can be used dry, and have long life. Unfortunately there are disadvantages too: microchipping and strong scratching (especially on powder steels), weaker feedback. If you consider it a good compromise, choose Diamond Bundle.

More Than Just Surviving (Hapstone V5 review)

"The fit and finish on the Hapstone Pro is really quite something. It’s reassuringly heavy, and using this tool is very pleasing. Nothing worse than roughly machined knobs on a precision instrument, but thankfully Hapstone paid attention to all details. I would say it’s almost like a piece of industrial modern art. In the future I may store it on a shelf, and I can expect visitors to be inquisitive as to what this contraption is. I know the way it looks is secondary (by a huge margin) to its performance, but I really do appreciate the construction and materials used."

  • Why the angle indications do not match my gauge.

Degree marks corresponds to correct values under specific conditions: mark is exactly below pivot unit; no stone is attached; vertical shaft is installed to default position (not the position for rotating clamp); cutting edge apex is positioned on the level of rubber working surface (not above), in range 1-2 mm from the end of working surface. If any condition is not met, appropriate adjustment/compensation should be done.

  • Can I buy Hapstone V5?

V5 version (Hapstone Pro) is discontinued.

How to use bundled stones

Basic stones are made of silicon carbide. Water is required to use. Immerse all stones in water for 10 minutes before use and keep them wet during the work. Do not keep the stones in water for long time.

Silicon Carbide

Bundled stones are made of silicon carbide. Water is required to use. Immerse all stones in water for 10 minutes before use and keep them wet during the work. Do not keep the stones in water for long time.

Stone set is optimized for sharpening knives made of hard steels. You can use 120 and 220 grit stones on soft steel knives. Using 400, 600 and 1000 grit stones with steels with hardness less than 58 hRC is not recommended.

Aluminum Oxide

Bundled stones are made of aluminum oxide. Water is required to use. Immerse all stones in water for 10 minutes before use and keep them wet during the work. Do not keep the stones in water for long time.

Stone set is optimized for sharpening knives made of soft steels. Using the stones with steels with hardness more than 59 hRC is not recommended.

Bundled diamonds are dual-sided, one side is coarsier than other. Three stones have total six grits. It is little bit tricky to identify grits. You can find identification marks on side face. The mark is grit specified in FEPA-F scale with arrow symbol facing to corresponding surface. A finer side is always copper colored.

All diamonds are bonded, not coated. It means you can clean, refresh, flatten and lap your diamond like any other synthetic stone. It's recommended to use water as lubricant to prevent stone loading.
