Dolerite sharpening stones are used for pre-finish sharpening on Edge Pro sharpeners. Slate stone is a naturally abrasive material of high density. Dolerite stones are mounted on high quality aluminum blanks.

Dolerite (also known as Diabase and Black Prince slate) is mined in the Ural mountains in Russia. Dolerite consist of silica, but unlike synthetic abrasives, do not consist of individual abrasive grains of the same size. Dolerite microquartz structure consists of fused crystal grains of different sizes.

Dolerite is recommended as a pre-finishing stone to be used with a Jasper finishing stone.

  • Refined olive oil
  • Oleic aсid

Dolerite stones do not have any minor defects. Dolerite stones always have a black and grey pattern; this is not a defect.

Dolerite stone does not require any preparations. It is naturally lapped to ultra-fine grit. This is a big advantage because the difficulty of lapping Dolerite is very high.

Q & A

  • What grit do these natural stones have?

Grit terminology is not applicable to natural sharpening stones, including slates. The behavior of a natural stone depends on its density and how good it was lapped.

  • What are the pros and cons of 6 mm and 3 mm thicknesses for sharpening stones?

All stones wear as they are used and thicker stones have longer life cycles as a result. However, it's easier to use thinner stones on Edge Pro sharpeners because of their lower weight. The 6 mm thickness offers a perfect balance between life cycle and weight, and has become the community standard for Edge Pro format sharpening stones When made of hard material, 3 mm stones are good as ultra-fine sharpening stones, for example alumina ceramic or natural stones.
