Gritomatic Ceramic Sharpening Stones are used for sharpening knives on Hapstone, TSProf, and other Edge Pro compatible knife sharpeners. Gritomatic ceramic stones are made of 96% alumina ceramics with the addition of color-changing chemical components to improve its properties. The stone has an extremely high hardness rating and scarcely wears over time.
Gritomatic Ceramics is sintered from alumina grains with size 1 to 3 microns which finer than ultra-fine ceramic stones like Spyderco (3 microns average). But Gritomatic Ceramic is not ultra-fine stone. The stone is lapped in a special way to make it ultra-fast cutting stone in the middle grit range. You can progress to Gritomatic Ceramics directly from a 320-400 grit JIS, and it will create a uniform scratch pattern comparable to 1500-2000 JIS. You can use it as a finish (for toothy edge) or pre-finish stone (Spyderco UF is a good choice).
Gritomatic Ceramics stones have a very tight flatness tolerance that outperforms all other sintered ceramics stones on the market.
Gritomatic Ceramics stones can be additionally lapped with fine loose silicon carbide to make it ultra-fine. Because the structure is made from grains 1 to 3 microns, the lapped stone can reach 5000-6000 grit. (If you lap your stone, please be aware it would be difficult to reproduce the factory surface without special equipment.)
Gritomatic Ceramics stones can be used as a fine ceramic honing rod, i.e. not for sharpening but for daily maintenance of knives.
Gritomatic Ceramics stones do not require preparation after purchase. Gritomatic Ceramics should be used with WD-40 as a lubricant. If you don't have WD-40, use Ballistol or similar gun oil lubricant.
