Charnley Forest (Charnwood) is very rare sharpening stone used for super finish sharpening knives on KME or Hapstone knife sharpeners. Charnley Forest stones are made of novaculite, a naturally abrasive material of high density. Charnley Forest stones are mounted on high-quality aluminum blanks.
Charnley Forest Whetstone was mined in Leicestershire region, in the United Kingdom. Estimated grit for the stone is 8000 JIS.
Charnley Forest is preliminarily lapped and does not require lapping after purchase. Charnley Forest stones should be used with water as a lubricant. Charnley Forest has a grey-green color, often with red streaks in it. Charnley Forest stones may have slight natural imperfections.
Advantages of aluminum blanks
- If you accidentally drop the stone, it's less likely you break it;
- Much longer life span for the stone after multiple flattening and lapping;
- Easy identification due to laser engraving;
- Reliable clamping for stones of imperfect shape.
Stones mounted on aluminum blanks are thicker than stock KME stones. We recommend using the thickness compensator if you use stones of different thickness.
