Aoto Whetstones are used for fine sharpening on KME and Hapstone sharpeners. Aoto is silica natural stone with estimated grit approximately 2000-3000 JIS.
Aoto (青砥) Whetstone is mined in Kameoka, Kyoto in Japan.
Historically Aoto was the most common whetstone in Japan to sharpen kitchen knives.
Aoto is preliminarily lapped and does not require lapping after purchase. Aoto should be used with water as a lubricant. Soak Aoto in the water for 2 minutes before use. During the sharpening, the slurry is released from the surface. It's not necessary to keep slurry on the stone surface.
Aoto stones may have slight natural imperfections and inclusions.
