Type: KME Stones
Zirconia Ceramic Stones are used for sharpening knives on KME and Hapstone knife sharpeners. Zirconia stones are made of Alumina-Zirconia ceramic with an extremely high hardness rating (over 9 Mohs) and estimated grit approximately 5000 JIS.
Alumina-Zirconia Ceramic scarcely wears over time. The material is used for manufacturing ceramic ball-bearings, dental crowns, and lapping plates for computer chips.
Zirconia Ceramic is preliminarily lapped and does not require lapping after purchase. Zirconia Ceramic stones should be used with oil as a lubricant (oleic acid, WD-40, refined olive oil).
Alumina-Zirconia has the density 4.00-4.05, compared to the standard Alumina density 3.70-3.75. The increased density gives the ability to make extra lapping if necessary.
Advantages of aluminum blanks
Stones mounted on aluminum blanks are thicker than stock KME stones. We recommend using the thickness compensator if you use stones of different thickness.
